Abstract

The origin of fermion masses and mixing angles is studied in a class of gauged family-symmetry models broken by elementary Higgs scalars at ≈ 10 3 TeV. It is found that large hierarchies among fermion masses can be produced more naturally in a model with four generations rather than three.
