Abstract
Obesity is an evolving, worldwide health problem associated with increased patient morbidity, mortality, and health care complications in both developing and industrialized western countries.1 Unfortunately, the prevalence of obesity continues to increase. As a result, all health care arenas, including anesthesiology, are impacted daily. The aims of this chapter are to characterize the scope, associated physiological changes, the overall anesthetic considerations and ultimately, the indications, limitations, and specialized techniques utilized for peripheral nerve and neuraxial regional anesthetic techniques in the obese patient population.
