On Contexual Modifications of Plosives

Abstract
Generative phonology recognizes phonemic & phonetic levels of representation. Within this framework, some low phonetic phenomena characteristic of plain stop plosives are contrasted in English & Polish; references are made to German & French also. Some phenomena--nasal plosion, lateral plosion, & lack of plosion--are common to English & Polish. The low phonetic processes are basically the same, & English differs from Polish in the scope of the rule application; in Polish the rules usually apply only to homorganic combinations. Stylistic variations sometimes cause a rearrangement of the rules, but they are not common. For the modifications of the articulatory movements, the homorganity entailment convention is established; in its generalized version it specifies the articulatory interdependence of all non-continuant segments. It is concluded that, in low phonetic derivations, rules may refer not only to whole segments but also to parts of segments. Modified AA
