Abstract
Despite its importance for social science, Thomas Kuhn's treatment of scientific change has never received a detailed articulation. Indeed, Kuhn's theory of "paradigms" has been elaborated but little since the second edition of The Structure of Scientific Revolutions in 1970. This essay offers a reconstruction and critique of the Kuhnian approach. Its reformulation is based on the philosophy of language strata proposed by Friedrich Waismann. The implications of the anti-positivist view of social science thus developed are then explored in several examples. This examination results in a revised conception of the nature and significance of "theory" in social science--and natural science.
