Abstract
Patients with heart failure have a poor prognosis and are exposed to considerable suffering during the course of their disease. The administration of dopamine to these patients results in improved cardiac performance and a profound natriuresis; the drug, however, is not active when ingested.
James Rossen and
Sol Rajfer describe the hemodynamic effects of orally administered levodopa, an endogenous precursor of dopamine, during long-term treatment of patients with heart failure.
