Abstract
A 58-year-old man with a history of neurosarcomatous malignant melanoma arising from a giant congenital melanocytic nevus (GCMN) developed a metastasis to the right lateral rectus muscle. Incisional biopsy of the tumor was followed by a course of 5000 rads of radiation to the orbit with a resultant diminution in the size of the lesion. While metastases to the orbit from cutaneous malignant melanoma are documented, this report is the first description of such a metastasis from a melanoma arising within a congenital melanocytic nevus. Like other melanomas metastatic to the orbit the site of metastasis was an extraocular muscle, the metastasis occurred late in the patient's course, and the patient died shortly after diagnosis.
