All organizations that need workers must determine selection criteria, recruitment methods, marketing strategy, selection devices, and final decision-making processes. The Miles and Snow typology is used to illustrate potential linkages between organizational strategies and staffing effectiveness. Several effective strategies are identified, and tentative propositions are developed about the compatibility of certain staffing practices with given organizational strategies. Selection criteria shape subsequent decisions, so these must be directly linked to job requirements. Recruitment methods-organizational strategy linkages have not yet been empirically demonstrated, but they seem likely. The best marketing strategy for a company to use with job candidates is to describe job/organizational characteristics as accurately as possible. Different organizational strategies determine the ways of screening applicants. Ultimately, the organization must decide whether to hire a given candidate, continue looking, or abandon the search.
