Abstract
Casual & rapid speech material from English & Polish is used in analyzing the interaction of phonostylistic rules. In phonostylistic derivations, there exist cases where more than one rule could apply & produce the same result. Such situations are described as 'overkill'. They allow us to make predictions about the obligatoriness of certain phonetic forms & about sound change in lexical representations. An effort is made to show that the interacting rules are independently motivated. AA
