Person preference choices: Tests of a subtractive averaging model

Abstract
Presented pairs of person descriptions, each pair consisting of 2 sets with different numbers of equal valued personality-trait adjectives, to 35 undergraduates. Each s indicated which person he would prefer to have as a friend and by how much. Reliable set-size effects were observed: for positive adjectives, s tended to prefer the person in the pair described by the larger number of adjectives; for negative adjectives, s tended to prefer the person described by the smaller number of adjectives. In agreement with averaging theory, degree of preference varied as a function of the difference in set size between the 2 person descriptions in a given pair and as a function of the polarity of the adjectives in the sets.
