Abstract
Purpose:
To describe, quantify, and assess the prevalence, type, and outcomes of mistreatment that PA students experience while completing their training. A supportive environment during training is critical to maximizing student learning. One strategy for creating a supportive environment is to eliminate barriers (such as student mistreatment) that create an undesirable climate for learning.
Methods:
The study utilized a nonexperimental, descriptive, research format using a questionnaire to investigate PA students' perceptions regarding the occurrence of mistreatment during their training. The survey consisted of 20 questions regarding the forms of mistreatment that the PA students may have experienced. Additional information regarding the location, source, and timing in training was requested in those instances when mistreatment occurred.
Results:
Seventy-nine percent of the responding students reported experiencing at least one form of mistreatment. Sexually oriented mistreatment was the most frequently reported form (50.4%). Verbal mistreatment was the second most commonly reported form (47.5%). Thirteen percent reported gender mistreatment. Among students reporting to have experienced at least one form of mistreatment, 72% did not report the mistreatment to any school official.
Conclusions:
The results of this study suggest that significant rates of mistreatment occur among PA students. A limitation of this study is that students who believe that they were mistreated may respond in higher proportions that students who did not perceive mistreatment during their training. The results of this survey should be substantiated with a larger sample of PA students. PA educators should begin to consider strategies designed to prevent and respond to mistreatment.
