Abstract
Podosporin A (1), a new tetracyclic sesquiterpene quinone exhibiting antifungal activity, antibacterial activity, and brine shrimp toxicity, has been isolated from the coprophilous fungus Podospora decipiens (NRRL 6461), a colonist of cattle dung. Podosporin A was obtained from ethyl acetate extracts of liquid cultures of P. decipiens by silica gel chromatography and reversed-phase HPLC, and its structure was assigned by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The isolation process was guided by in vitro bioassays for antifungal antagonism toward other coprophilous fungi. © 1988, American Chemical Society. All rights reserved.
