Abstract
Sickle cell disease produces numerous complications in pregnant women and is associated with spontaneous abortion, intrauterine growth retardation and, perhaps, neonatal death. At this time, it is unclear whether all pregnant women with sickle cell disease should be transfused, or transfused only if they develop acceleration of their haematological disorder. All should receive the usual prenatal iron and vitamins, and extra folic acid should be provided. When complications occur, the obstetrician, the haematologist and sometimes the anaesthesiologist and surgeon must communicate with each other frequently and easily, to develop reasonable approaches to particular problems. Pregnancy is not contraindicated in sickle cell disease, but intensive individualized care is required if it is to be safe for the mother, and have a reasonably good chance of producing a healthy child.
