Abstract
The paper deals with possibilities to measure as quickly and precisely as possible rain totals averaged over the area of a river catchment. It presents methods of estimation of variance for area-averaged rain totals using spatial correlation function of rain system. Hourly rain totals, derived from radar and gauge network, and averaged over a catchment, are compared. The comparison results in improving radar calibration and leads to a choice a Z-R relationship the best fitted to central Poland summer rains. Calculation of the variance of estimation of area-averaged hourly rain totals shows that the variances of radar and gauge network are both of the same order. There are possibilities to improve radar accuracy and to calculate in nearly real time the uncertainty limits of area-averaged rain totals. Such computation system is to be introduced on AMSR radar system.
