Preparing for the Birth of Our Library Blog

Abstract
Blogging offers an alternative and sometimes superior way to communicate with library patrons. It provides an opportunity to speak more directly to them, and it does so in a manner that is more comfortable and convenient for all involved. A library's Web site may be the only interaction that patrons have with the organization, so it makes sense to have a conversational and dynamic Web presence full of fresh information that will keep them coming back. Planning is paramount and should be the first step toward creating a thriving and long-lasting blog. In this article, the authors describe the process they followed to bring a blog to the Colorado State University Libraries. Recommendations include: (1) Scope/vision -- decide on a focal point for the blog; (2) Identify the primary and secondary audience -- this will help set a tone and clearly speak to its interests; (3) Determine high-priority topics -- the topics most important to communicate to the audience; (4) Sources for new content; (5) Time frame to launch of the blog; (6) Ideas for advertising and launching -- consider the schedule of the intended audience ; (7) Evaluation criteria -- monitor the number of visitors to the blog at regular intervals; (8) Publication guidelines -- established guidelines for posting regularly; (9) Editorial guidelines -- be professional and consistent; and (10) Measuring success -- has the time investment paid off with an improved dialogue with patrons and colleagues?
