Abstract
To investigate the prevalence of parent-reported tooth grinding in a population of preschool-aged children attending a dental school, and to identify associated factors.
A total of 931 children aged 1–6 years documented in the electronic health records were analyzed. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize demographics and clinical features. Bivariate analyses explored the associations between parent-reported tooth grinding and various characteristics. Multivariable logistic regression was conducted to identify significant predictors of parent-reported tooth grinding, with odds ratios and confidence intervals reported. The model's fit was assessed, and multicollinearity among predictors was evaluated.
Among the 931 participants, 70.8 % reported tooth grinding. Bivariate analysis showed that children taking daily medications were more likely to grind their teeth (78.6 % vs. 67.2 %; p < 0.001). Multivariable logistic regression confirmed this positive association (OR = 1.21, 95 % CI: 1.03–1.44; p = 0.025) and also found that children without mental health issues had higher odds of parent-reported tooth grinding compared to those with mental health issues (OR = 1.64, 95 % CI: 1.03–2.60; p = 0.037).
Tooth grinding as reported by parents was highly prevalent in this sample of preschoolers and prevalence was associated with number of medications and mental health status.
