Abstract
Mail survey data from 1,103 mental health professionals employed in community mental health centers, private hospital psychiatric units, & state hospitals (total N = 109) in IL are drawn on to explore how helpful they perceived professionally led, support, & self-help groups. Results suggest that professionals may hold certain attitudes that may interfere with collaboration with self-help organizations. As the settings in which professionals work have more impact on their views of helping groups than does their professional identity, suggestions are made for a new focus in professional education. 2 Tables, 1 Figure, 33 References.
