Promise and paradox: the uneven rise of AI in African journalism education

Abstract
This study critically examines the apparent promises, challenges, and readiness regarding AI adoption across the top African journalism schools. Survey results revealed enthusiasm among educators for AI, particularly its potential to increase students’ confidence in the digital workplace and improve teaching methods. Faculty members identified barriers to AI adoption in Africa, including inadequate infrastructure, ambiguous guidelines, and faculty expertise. This analysis, informed by disruption innovation theory, examines how AI disrupts the teaching and learning process, including data privacy, bias, and ethical concerns. To address challenges, faculty recommend developing infrastructure, increasing investment, collaboration with industry and with other departments.
