Abstract

A passage in Menander Rhetor's instructions for the bedroom speech implies that visible postcoital proof of the new bride’s loss of virginity was exhibited before witnesses on the day after the wedding. This may be the earliest literary evidence for this practice in the ancient Greek-speaking world.
