Abstract
Examines the relative effect of type of intervention, offender characteristics, & type of incident offense on the length of time until a petition to revoke probation for a drug offender is filed & until an actual probation revocation. Both parametric & nonparametric estimation procedures are used to analyze the survival or failure of 718 male probationers in Birmingham, AL. No difference is found in the effect of a program of drug monitoring & treatment, compared to monitoring only, for either of 2 measures of recidivism. Findings also reveal a shorter time to a petition to revoke probation among younger & African-American offenders, & a shorter period until failure for African Americans & for those with a prior arrest record, suggesting empirical support for a reconsideration of the type of intervention effective in deterring probationers. 3 Tables, 6 Figures, 1 Appendix, 31 References.
