Abstract
Several investigators (Macken & Ferguson, 1983; Menn, 1983) have emphasized the importance of regressions in phonological development to cognitively oriented models of phonology. To date, few cases of regressions have been reported. The present report is a descriptive study of the phonological regressions in the development of two normally developing children, aged 1; 10–2;0 and 2;0–2;2. Each subject was observed in the home three times a week, 3 to 4 hours a session for a period of 2 months. Results indicate the subjects differed in type of regression produced, with the younger subject evidencing regressions in sound classes and the older subject evidencing regressions of isolated words. The findings of the study are summarized and related to more general issues in phonological development.
