Abstract
Although shoot meristems have the potential for unlimited production of lateral organs, they eventually become determinate and lose that potential. Timing of determinacy in the different shoot meristems of a plant is consequently an important determinant of its architecture. Culturing of vegetative shoot meristems of maize has provided a powerful means of manipulating the timing of determinacy and thus the developmental program of the shoot. We have found that leaf primordia can provide the signal that bestows determinacy in vegetative meristems by inducing inflorescence development. Certain tassel seed genes also regulate determinacy in reproductive development: ts4 and Ts6 mutants are defective in both pistil suppression and in determinacy of specific reproductive meristems.
