Resolving high precision U-Pb ages from Tertiary plutons with complex zircon systematics

Abstract
Analyses are presented of multigrain zircon fractions from Palaeocene tonalite to granodiorite intrusions from SE Alaska, using a series of intense partial dissolution steps. The zircon systematics are complicated by minor inheritance and post-crystallization Pb loss. The partial dissolution steps preferentially remove outer layers susceptible to Pb loss and cores containing inherited components, and yield hollow shells of low-U primary igneous zircon giving highly precise, reproducible and concordant ages.
