Abstract
Operations research provides insight into improved operational decision-making in surgical suites before the day of surgery. This article focuses on operating room allocation and case scheduling, including how to release allocated operating room time. Decisions differ from those based on operating room utilization. This article aims to provide guidance to the practitioner of operations research asked to assist in operational management decisions at a hospitals or free-standing outpatient surgical facility. In addition, the article considers how to calculate the potential cost reduction from reducing turnover times or changing OR allocations.
