Abstract
Across essays surveying and interpreting literature, material culture, social networks, and artistic ambitions, the field, if these issues are representative, seems to be coming into its own-and coming into its own as a unique site for recovering capacities of imagination over and above presenting empirically watertight historical accounting. Beginning with the cart of chopped wood that might just as easily have been left out of the background of an engraved plate illustrating William Apess's Indian Nullification, Sy returns that cart to a historical process: The committee also wishes to recognize with an honorable mention Andrea Knutson's essay "The True Temper of It: Combustibility and Emblematic Representation in Richard Ligon's True and Exact History of the Island of Barbados" As with Sy's essay, Knutson's turns our attention to a material object-here, clay pots-that enjoyed significant circulation and value in the colonial world.
