Abstract
Leishmania chagasi is a protozoa pathogen which causes disease with a wide clinical spectrum varying from asymptomatic to symptomatic disease, visceral leishmaniasis (VL) or kala-azar, which is fatal in 5-10% of the cases even with proper treatment. VL became a disease predominantly of periurban sites in Brazil in the last 20 years and the newly endemic areas have expanded to southeast and central regions of the country. The factors determining the risk of exposure to Leishmania include important social-economic variables related to location, type of house material and presence of animals, whereas the factors leading to disease are also complex and include host genetic factors, exposure to sandflies, co-infections and nutritional status. In this review we will discuss the urbanization of A in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, as well as the factors involved in infection and development of diseased caused by L. chagasi.
