Abstract
[...] drawing from an uncertainty avoidance/causal attribution theoretical perspective,7 we estimate direct effects of defendant's race/ethnicity and gender on length of imprisonment imposed for convictions of federal drug trafficking/manufacturing during federal fiscal year 1998-1999. [...] we estimate the effect of the legacy of lynching (1880-1930) at the federal district level on the impact of sentence departures, and hypothesize that this legacy will either strengthen or weaken the effects of departures.
