Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to challenge the US version of recreation for persons with disabilities. The recreation therapy (RT) profession has been one of the leading providers of recreation for persons with disabilities, but recently has endorsed an exclusively clinical approach to service. The paper cites evidence that the US version of the RT profession is self-serving and obsolete. The paper explores the contradictory American ideologies of equality and freedom as a source of discomfort with diversity, breeding uniformity at the individual and professional levels. An alternative model for recreation with persons with disabilities is presented along with its guiding principles with the intent of beginning a global dialogue about recreation with persons with disabilities. In contrast to the US therapy approach, a global model should endorse empowerment, diversity, self-determination and intrinsic motivation as key elements to recreation with persons with disabilities.
