Abstract
The classification of American Silurian species of the family Calymenidae is revised with a survey of type material. Calymene brownsportensis n. sp. (Ludlow, Tennessee) is most closely related to the coeval Oklahoma species C. clavicula Campbell, 1967. The early Wenlock Calymene niagarensis Hall, 1843, and C. breviceps Raymond, 1916, are reviewed. Calymene n. sp. A (Ludlow or Přídolí, Indiana) can possibly be assigned to an Upper Silurian species group. American Llandovery diversity is dominated by Diacalymene Kegel, 1927. Diacalymene macrocephala (Prouty, 1923), from the late Llandovery of Maryland, is closely allied to Llandovery species of Diacalymene from Anticosti and Georgia; D. rostrata (Vogdes, 1879) belongs to this group rather than to Spathacalymene Tillman, 1960. Diacalymene vogdesi (Foerste, 1887), from the early to mid-Llandovery of Ohio, is very close morphologically to the Welsh D. crassa Shirley, 1936. Calymene cresapensis Prouty, 1923 (late Llandovery, Maryland) is reassigned to Liocalymene Raymond, 1916, as it shares several of the distinctive derived characters of L. clintoni (Vanuxem, 1842). Relationship is suggested between Liocalymene and Sthenarocalymene Siveter, 1977.
