Abstract
The singular legacy of Doug Sahm and his quintessential Texas garage band, the Sir Douglas Quintet, belies a number of conventional notions about garage rock: that the music necessarily represents a triumph of inspired amateurism over crass commercialism, that its practitioners were musically limited and had a short career span, and that most garage rock sounds very much the same. For Sir Doug, garage music was not a categorical style but an essential spirit, one that he sustained as he traversed a musical landscape as expansive as his native state. [PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]
