Abstract
Briefly addresses the modification of vowels in the speaking versus singing voice, a topic often raised in vocal pedagogy. Reviews three motivating factors including wanting to achieve a broader dynamic range while singing, balancing dynamics across phonemes, and producing expressive or aesthetically pleasing tone quality. Discusses each in turn noting some of the physiological mechanisms which affect vowel production.
