Abstract
In spite of efforts to improve overall quality of nursing home care, the adequacy of long‐term care for residents with dementia remains a problem. This article is based on deliberations at a conference, held in St. Louis, Missouri, October 9 and 10, 1990, designed to evaluate issues relevant to that care and to accelerate needed research. Discussions focused on care in nursing homes, whether in traditional or “specialized” care units, but many of those issues are relevant in caring for people with dementia elsewhere.
