Abstract
Changes in speech perception were assessed in prelingually deaf child subjects (Ss) wearing the Nucleus cochlear implant (N = 34) & postlingually deaf adult Ss wearing either the Nucleus (N = 9), the Clarion (N = 15), or the Ineraid cochlear implant (N = 15). The three cochlear implant speech processing strategies were feature extraction, continuous interleaved sampling, & compressed analog, respectively. Speech perception changes were tracked over 3 years of cochlear implant use. Pediatric tests included the Monosyllable-Trochee-Spondee Test, the Phonetically Balanced Kindergarten (PBK) test, the World Intelligibility by Picture Identification test, the Central Institute for the Deaf low verbal test, & a vowel feature test. Adult tests included the Iowa Consnant Test, the Iowa Sentence Test, the Iowa Vowel Test, & the Northwestern University No. 6 word test. The phonetically balanced, monosyllabic tests (PBK & NU-6) were scored by word & phoneme. The child Ss showed continuous improvement over 3 years of CI use with ceiling effects evident on some closed-set tests. Most improvements in adult performance occurred in the 1st year; however, continued gains were observed through the 2nd year. 6 Figures, 23 References. Adapted from the source document
