Abstract
This article focuses on the representation of sporting practices in the works of Roland Barthes, Roch Carrier, and Fatou Diome in order to illustrate how Glissant’s notion of Relation – and its concomitant principles of opacity, rhizome identity, and le Même and le Divers – shed new light on the modes of interaction entailed in global sports cultures. I explore the relevance of these concepts to an analysis of sports before turning to their applicability to specific literary texts in French. Although the mise en relation of individuals, peoples, and cultures through sport is generally presented as a positive in Barthes and Carrier, Diome’s novel underscores the illusionary nature of the sense of community created, including the perpetuation of exploitative societal structures.
