Abstract
We present a numerical stability analysis of the recently reported fundamental dark surface wave [ J. Opt. Soc. Am. B 8, 759 ( 1991)]. We show that the dark-power dispersion relation for the wave bifurcates into two branches and that the lower-power branch is stable, whereas the higher-power branch is unstable. This bifurcation is a result of topological differences between the phase-space portraits for each of the surface-wave solutions. Finally, we show that the numerical results of the analysis may be understood with the aid of a coupled-mode model.
