Abstract
Conducting a thorough preanesthetic evaluation that balances efficiency with patient-centered care is a critical yet challenging skill for anesthesia nursing students. This curricular initiative introduced standardized patient (SP) simulations to support the development of communication and assessment skills in a realistic, psychologically safe environment. Three SP simulations were designed and implemented to reflect common anesthetic cases and concerns for general anesthesia, regional anesthesia, and monitored anesthesia care. Students completed pre/post surveys measuring self-confidence across patient-centered care domains. Results from the inaugural cohort (n = 14) demonstrated statistically significant improvements in information sharing, participation, collaboration, and review of systems with large effect sizes. SP feedback data highlighted strong interpersonal communication and professionalism, while physical exam skills were less consistent. This report supports the use of best practices in SP simulation to teach patient-centered care in anesthesia education and offers strategies for curricular integration and future refinement.
