Abstract

Effective learning is critical to students’ academic success in college. However, no prior research has examined the study strategies of first- and continuing-generation college students. We surveyed the study habits of a large sample of college students from a learning to learn class, disaggregating students by generational status. Both generational groups reported using ineffective learning strategies. Ineffective strategies were associated with lower GPAs for both groups, but with lower GPAs for first-generation students overall. Our results have implications for first-generation student success through supporting academic learning and the use of effective learning strategies.
