Abstract
This experiment was carried out in order to determine if drinking elicited by central implantation of carbachol was in any way dependent on the renin-angiotensin system of the kidney. Rats were stereotaxically implanted with cannulae in the medial septal nucleus and then screened to determine whether they drank to carbachol. After a suitable period all positive cholinergic drinkers were randomly assigned to one of three experimental groups: nephrectomized, ureterally ligated, and sham operated. The appropriate operations were performed and 9–11 hr following surgery all animals were stimulated with carbachol and given a one hr drinking test. Since there were no significant differences in cholinergic drinking following nephrectomy, it was concluded that the dipsogenic effects of centrally administered carbachol are not mediated by release of renal related renin-angiotensin.
