Tarchetti's "fame": Revisiting the Myth of the Scapigliato as Misfit Genius

Abstract
The dominant interpretation of Scapigliatura, especially in Tarchetti's case, is summed up by the formula of anticonformism: opposition to and subversion of bourgeois culture. This essay contends that a focus on transgression and marginality obscures affinities between the frustrated ideals of the Scapigliati and the value system they rejected. Adopting an ecocritical perspective-namely, an approach to literature as a means of exploring the relationship of abstract cultural realities with concrete life processes-Blum traces connections between different aspects of Tarchetti's work in order to cast light on the underpinnings of his counter-discourse. The transcendent ideals of the "misfit genius," from this vantage point, appear to be complicitous with the worldly contingencies of an authoritarian society in the throes of modernization. Blum's broader goal is to contribute to the understanding of Scapigliatura as the phenomenon that best reveals, in the Italian context, the roots of the conflation of creativity and malaise that characterizes literary modernity.
