Abstract
Bloom explains why teaching journalism class in Iowa is difficult. Iowa's largest newspaper, The Des Moines Register, once was one of America's great newspapers. However, the state's newspapers today are in a sorry state, which makes teaching Iowa students journalism more difficult. Because there are so few local exemplars, relatively few Iowa students today know what constitutes a good newspaper.
