Abstract
Ideas about young people and books reflected concerns for youthful well-being, both in adolescence and after. Although current professional values are much different from the ones articulated in librarianship's early years, it is useful to recognize the origins of professional practice and the changes of principle that have taken place over time. Dramatic statements about reading as a potential harm to young people may seem foreign now but represent a key legacy of early professional services, as librarians sought to use the best scientific and professional information available in the service of young readers.
