Abstract
The economic benefits such states as New Hampshire have gained from holding presidential primaries have long been realized. Every four years thousands of dollars are funneled into primary states by presidential candidates and the media. The recent party reforms which encourage grassroots campaigns have served to increase the number of candidates spending actively in the primaries. Even with federal ceilings on per state expenditures substantial sums of money are spent in the primary states. Yet not all states benefit equally from this economic windfall. This paper examines the determinants of candidate spending in presidential primaries. Results show that states which hold early primaries and have large numbers of delegates stand to experience the greatest economic gains.
