Abstract
Asthmatic patients with an atopic subtype associated with a higher prevalence of allergic symptoms and reactive airways had differences in levels of expression of multiple genes, including histone deacetylase 2 (HDAC2), a gene implicated in steroid-resistant asthma. Rhinitis was defined as physician-diagnosed hay fever or allergy and nasal symptoms in the previous year and then divided into allergic rhinitis (AR) or nonallergic rhinitis (NAR) on the basis of the presence or absence of 1 or more positive allergen-specific IgE measurements.
