Abstract

The article presents some arguments for and against the practice of the double-blind review. Those in favor believe it leads to more honesty among reviewers because they are less likely to give a favorable review to more prestigious authors to ingratiate themselves. Without anonymity, some argue that junior reviewers may be more hesitant to offer critical evaluations for fear of career reprisals. Those who are against double-blind studies believe signing a name to a review is more likely to promote conscientious evaluations because they hold the reviewer more accountable. The author proposes more research into the benefits and detriments of the double-blind review.
