The Impersonal Extraposition Construction in German: Evidence for the Demotion Analysis of Impersonal Passives

Abstract
Two relational grammar analyses of Dutch & German impersonal passive constructions are compared. Within David M. Perlmutter & Paul M. Postal's advancement analysis, every personal passive has a dummy 2 that co-occurs with a 1 in one stratum & advances to 1 in the following stratum. In contrast, Perlmutter & Annie Zaenen's demotion analysis asserts that a 1 in one stratum is demoted to chomeur in the following stratum. A revised alternative to Perlmutter & Zaenen's demotion analysis is presented here to account for impersonal passives in German. 18 References. C. Brennan
