The Neuropathology of Everyday Life: The Frequency of Partial Seizure Symptoms among Normals

Abstract
The three studies reported were concerned with the phenomenology of partial seizure-like symptoms. Although the findings from Studies 1 and 2 demonstrated that normal individuals do report experiencing partial seizure-like phenomena, such symptoms are generally quite infrequent. Thus, for clinical purposes, any individual seizurelike symptom that occurs more than once per month should be considered of potential clinical relevance, because such a frequency either approaches or exceeds the outer limits of normal human experience. In both studies, increased levels of symptom reporting were observed in seemingly healthy young adults who had experienced various risk factors for cerebral dysfunction (e.g., loss of consciousness due to head trauma, severe febrile illness in adulthood or adolescence). In Study 3, selected brain-injured patients, drawn from an actual clinical population, reported a breadth and frequency of partial seizure-like symptomatology that dramatically surpassed the limits of normal variability. Considered together, the findings support the proposition that experiencing of partial seizure phenomena can be conceptualized as a continuum ranging from a healthy, essentially symptom-free state to overt CNS dysfunction with multiple partial seizure symptoms. The results of the present research also suggest that it is feasible to develop a standardized symptom interview to assist in the diagnosis of partial seizure syndromes and other electrophysiologically based disorders.
