Abstract
The pediatrician can play an important role in the oral health of children. The three types of dental caries described in this article each have a major preventive protocol. The establishment of proper feeding practices, the use of pit and fissure sealants, and the appropriate use of fluorides can contribute to a generation of children who are virtually free of dental caries. The occurrence of dental caries has decreased dramatically with the widespread use of fluoridation and supplemental flourides after World War II; however, there are still cases of children with extensive tooth decay.
