Abstract
The predicates liegen, sitzen, stehen, legen, setzen, and stellen pose usage problems for native speakers of English that go beyond uncertainties involving conjugation, case requirements, and choice of auxiliary. Liegen, sitzen, and stehen can all be rendered by English be, and legen, setzen, and stellen by put, but the German verbs are not synonymous and generally cannot be substituted for one another. This study presents the basic rules that govern the use of these predicates. The rules are intended as a guide to help the language learner understand the special characteristics of these verbs as well as to use them correctly in producing authentic German sentences.
