Abstract
The contributors to Psychological Perspectives on Justice (see record 1994-97014-000) systematically use the principles of behavioral decision theory to evaluate the nature and functions of the various rules of fairness in society. The reviewers discuss individual chapters in detail. The book maintains a careful balance between theorizing and empirical research, but the reviewers found those chapters that focused on broader theoretical and conceptual issues to be considerably more thought provoking and readable than those that were primarily empirical in content. Regardless, the reviewers commend Mellers and Baron for closely approximating the systematic and integrative argumentation that successful single-authored books often achieve, but that rarely occurs in edited volumes. Finally, although the present volume clearly illustrates the usefulness of a behavioral decision theory in the study of justice, its greatest contribution lies in demonstrating how social goals and strategies influence judgments and decisions about the allocation of valued resources.
