Abstract
After a brief review of the Bleulerian and Schneiderian systems, this article focuses on those studies that challenge the clinical usefulness of their criteria as pathognomonic indicators of schizophrenia. The results of these studies repeatedly indicate that Bleulerian and Schneiderian symptoms may also occur quite frequently in the affective disorders. This reevaluation is important for defining valid psychopathologic syndromes suitable for etiologic studies as well as for therapeutic considerations.
