Abstract
In the 19th century, one's entire character is attributed by the size and shape of one's skull. Franz Joseph Gall and Johann Spurzheim in Vienna developed this practice called phrenology in the early 1800s. Here, Allen et al discuss several precise studies of the size and shape of the brain that yielded fresh insights into neural development, differences between the sexes, and human evolution.
